I downloaded WinDVD 7 (trial). It *tries* to play DVD but all I get is
garbled audio and still images which change about once a minute or a
black screen.

It's working fine now. I guess it helps to reboot the computer after
installing software. :-)

dvd loaded previously, now it does not load.

What has happened since it played correctly? Did you try reinstalling your
DVD decoding software?
