Camera no longer recognized...

OK, allow me to give you the history of this problem.

Everything is working fine on Friday. I can download footage from my
JVC camera, through the DV out, into my PC via firewire. Great.

No new software is installed.

Saturday I take the computer from my home to a theatre, where it is
used to play a looping video all day. It is out of my site, but as far
as I am aware nothing out of the ordinary happens. Only the screen is
accessible to the public.

Sunday, I plug everything back up, but now when I switch my camera back
on, it is not recognized. XP does not flash up the normal 'what would
you like to do box'. Nothing. At all.

The Firewire card shows up in Device Manager.

The 1394 Connection shows up under Network Connections.
I have turned off the firewall for that connection.

I have tried uploading from a different (Sony) camera. Nothing.

I have tried taking the firewire cable and my JVC camera to another
computer, where it is recognised instantly.

This appears to be the only problem that has arisen since Friday.

Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I should go
from here? I have some pretty important footage that needs editing,
and I am presently completely stuck.

Might try deleting the firewire card entry from device manager,in case the
driver is corrupted, then reboot and let windows reinstall it. If that
doesn't help, the card itself may be fried. Try reseating it. If no joy, try
another card.

Thanks Burgy,

I've tried that with no success. I've got another card in the post now
though. Weird that it's still recognised and the USB ports on the same
card work.

As some additional information, I've tried System Restoring back to
Friday with no success.

What was the pc used for while away? What was being watched, what may have
been connected? Along with the damage may have been caused by someone
incorecctly plugging something in or out, it may be that a setting has been
changed, though system restore should have sorted that.

Hi Graham,

The sole use of the PC was to play a wmv on a loop all day.

No one at the theatre knew I was bringing the computer, and as far as I
know they didn't have anything to plug into it. They certainly had no
reason to. And when I came back at the end of the day, it was still
running the video.

MAy just be bad luck with the firewire card, has it arrived yet? Thney can
show as fine in device manager but be faulty.

To the sound of much cheering, the new card turned up today and
detected the camera straight away!

So the moral of the story is - Device Manager lies.

The problem with device manager is not that it lies, but in that it
doesn't/can't check the whole funtionality of the card.
Well at least you can get back on with your editing
