Default Codec installation

I've been trying to find a way to convert DVD footage I made with an older
analogue camcorder and my stand alone DVD recorder for importing into MM.
Initially, the older version of MM that comes with XP initially would take
the file, but I could not use them at all without problems.

I've been using a free version of Fair Use Wizard to convert DVD footage to
AVI.

Now with MM2, it now recorgnizes my converted footage as AVI and when I go
to import, it can't due to a missing codec needed.

Problem is, I did allow MM2 to get new codecs automoatically and initially,
I had to grant access due to my firewall protection but apparently, it's
still not installed. I don't know what to look for in a codec file or where
to even get it manually to install.

Any auggestions from the peanut gallery?

Thanks.

John.
