Default Windows movie maker 2 for xp

I imported a large avi file, the beginning of the file is of poor quality.
To remove the bad part I split the clip, drug the new clip to the storyboard.
Nothing will play in the timeline or the media player for the second clip
but will play for the first clip.
How can a remove the first bad part out of an avi file? Tried to use the
trim video part of the program and couldn't get that to work either.

The procedure is usually...

Import the file

Add it to the timeline

Choose where to split

Right click on the part you do NOT want and select Delete.

Save the edited video to your hard drive.
