Default USB vs Firewire

My company needs to purchase a semi pro camcorder for corporate wide use. The
problem that we have encountered is that our I.T. department has a policy
that only allows USB 2.0 computer connections. There will be no Firewire
cards added to company computers. I have been working on this for about 10
months and have found only a handful of camcorders that support USB 2.0 video
transfer and the majority of them do not have the features that we need. My
question is "Does anyone make a Firewire to USB 2.0 converter that will
transfer video from a DV camcorder to a computer?"

Let me know what company that is so that my company won't get involved with
them.

I'm afraid you'll have to make an appointment with the IT department and
explain the situation. Firewire (ie IEEE1394) is the default connection for
any digital camcorder to the PC.

No firewire, you're going to be stuck with analog video.... Or of course you
can get an external editing company to do the work for you.

Another MVP shows minimal knowlege. My Sony Digital 8 camera will connect
with a USB 2.0.

Hi,
I dont want to join (or prolong) any argument because Cari has been very
helpful,

However, I also use USB2.0 to connect my Panasonic GS-35 to my PC.

The video downloads as DV-AVI format. Of course, there is some discussion as
to whether USB2.0 is fast enough and whether firewire would be better to
avoid dropped frames. I have costed a firewire card locally at $AUS39. That
won't break the bank, so I will most probably get one. I will need some more
disk space as I continually have problems in running out of space when
creating a DVD. So I will kill two birds with one stone and get the computer
shop install them both at the same time (unless I feel confident enough to
do install them myself - I have already put in 2 CD/DVD drives, a 4*USB port
and a network card myself, so maybe I can ???)

Some will, some won't.... but the rate of dropped frames will be far higher
in a USB port than a firewire port.... and the whole point of digital video
is quality.

I rarely have one single dropped frame with firewire capture. How many do
you have in the average hour long capture process?

I happily run all other applications while capturing digital video... with
no detrimental effects.. Do you?

A. Last time I checked USB 2.0 was faster than firewire.

B. Never had a dropped frame using USB 2.0

C. While transfering video via USB 2.0 I am usually downloading porn,
watching movies, using email, listening to music, involved in 3 or 4 flame
wars in various chat rooms, remote accessing my work pc, recording tv via a
hradware encoder card and editting pictures for work. Sometimes I am also
playing online poker.

D. Do they let anybody be a MVP nowadays?

A. USB2 speed is measured as a burst, 480mbps and is not available as a
constant which firewire is at 400mbps.
B. That is good, as most people do suffer dropped frames..

Forgot to ask, as I don't have a cam with USB2 output so can't test.
When connected via USB2 do you have control over the camcorder controls,
such as play, record etc via the editing app?
