I have a new Satellite A75-S213 laptop and when I put my IEEE 1394 card into
my laptop, it always freezes. I've tried the hotfix update from Microsoft
but it doesn't work, my computer still freezes. I use the card so that I can
connect my digital camcorder to my laptop and download the video from my DV
tapes.

Has anyone else experienced this problem. If anyone can help me out with
this, I would really appreciate it because I have some vacation video I'd
like to get of my camcorder, edit, and burn to a DVD. (Also, the card is
fine because I used it in my previous laptop, and I also use it in my
friend's Toshiba laptop). Please feel free to email me at

A google search tells me that your computer has built-in firewire.

Maybe the card is clashing with the IEEE 1394 (firewire) port that is
built in to your computer. Why do you need two?

Thanks for your reply. I do see a part on the side of my laptop that says
IEEE 1394, but that port is covered (as if there is nothing there). Also the
port looks too small for me to connect it to my camera. I checked my
paperwork that came with the laptop, & there is no information regarding an
IEEE port already with my computer. I also checked the device manager, and
it does not show there.

So, right now, I've been trying to plug in a PC Card into my laptop, and the
card does have 2 IEEE 1394 ports automatically built in on it. Microsoft
actually also sent me a hotfix which I tried, but that did not work either,
so I kinda hit a brick wall with everything I could think of that i need to
do.

takes a while for windows to load the information, and then the IEEE
information does show up in my device manager, but then when you go to "my
networks" it shows the IEEE 1394 link as being "disabled". I tried to
"enable" it a number of times, but the error I receive is that the device
cannot be turned on. The card does not have a on/off switch. Thank you for

I am not sure I can help you.

I want you to be aware that IEEE1394 connectors come in 4pins or 6pins. The
4 pins connector is much smaller than the 6 pins. Also it could be that
your laptop has a 4 pin connector and it might have a dust cover you should
be able to remove to be able to use it. Also when you look in device
manager make sure you click on the view tab and select show hidden devices
and look to see if you have the IEEE1394 host installed. You might not need
a PC card cause you probably already have the hardware in your laptop.

The firewire por(s) are likely disabled in BIOS.

It's a notebook, if they're blanked off, they don't exist in that particular
model but it shares the 'shell' (case) with another similar model in the
range which does have a 1394 port. Common on all modern notebooks.

Yes, it does look like it's just the shell for a firewire port because the
case does not come off. Does anyone have any suggestions on why the system
keeps locking up whenever I try to plug in the IEEE 1394 card? Thanks so
