firewire import software lockup

Hello Video group.

Recently had problems with importing DV via Sony TRV330. My camera was
having problesm, so I decided to make it all easy and get the media
conversion box, Pyro A/V Link Pro with Premiere Elements - D to A Media
Converter

This device allows any analog source to be imported via firewire DV. I have
lots of footage on S-VHS and this allows for S-VHS and audio "in" to DV
output to computer. Well, almost.

the computer ( P4 1.8hz, winXP, SP2, 1gig ram) recognizes the device exactly
as the Pyro spec says in device Mgr. "AVC compliant DV camcorder" ( this
device is working properly...)

That's where it stops. I Could import through, (1) Roxio media, (2) Adobe
premier (lite), (3) Sony Vegas 6.0, (4) Ulead 7.0, windows (5) Movie Maker2,
or (6) Pinnacle software. ( yea, lots of choices. I bought them all for
different editing reasons, but all have import functions).

When I attempt to capture through any of these, I get the never ending
hourglass of death. Everything stops. A few times I got a very choppy
preview (no audio), but all control over the software is gone. I can't even
quit with "Control+Alt+Delete" (calling device manager to quit the program.)
None of them will quit until I turn off the Pyro converter. Then a window
comes up and says "your digital capture device is unplugged". Only then will
the locked software release and close.

Most of the software will reopen, and shows the "AVC compliant DV camcorder"
as it's selected device. But they all choke on any import attempt.

I CAN hook up my Pinnacle 500 USB

and import via Pinnacle software, but it is NOT a DV capture and is very
grainy. OK for cheapo web clips, but Not high enough quality for quality
production and DVD renders.

I think this problem must be either a Memory, IRQ or XP configuration
problem, since it happens in ALL software trying to import. I don't think it
is hardware, since the computer recogizes the device fine. The Pyro device
itself is pretty simple with few ways to screw up the hook up. There are no
conflicts visable in Device Manager,

Any insights or possible places to check in XP or configurations would be
appreciated. I'd hate to go back to the old way of editing A-B Rolls in
S-VHS decks and digital mixers, but right now I need to edit, not fight with
computers.

from the Sony TRV330 ( when it recognized it...). But alas the camera died,
and there is no similiar replacement (import S-VHS....).

Your cam is a digital 8? If so, why use the box, go straight to the pc with
firewire? you are not converting analogue to digital, it's digital anyway??
So many editing apps can cause trouble as tehya ll try to use the components
at the same time and cause mayhem, this may be your problem from the
beginning.

I believe his problem from the beginning was not being able to import DV
from any device in any software.
since he states to have winXP SP2, he may be having a problem with firewire
import that is caused by the sp2 upgrade. here is more about that.
