Default how to capture from dvd

I transferred my home movies from analog 8mm tape to DVD-R using a
digital video recorder. Now I want to transfer to my hard drive for
video editing.
The articles and faqs I've read explain how to capture directly from a
camcorder, but not how to capture from a DVD. Can anyone point me to
another article or faq, or perhaps offer an explanation. Thanks.
Frank

You'll have to convert the VOB files to something that your third party
software can handle.....

PowerDirector and WinDVD Creator, Nero and Roxio can all handle the VOB
files directly... WindowsMovieMaker cannot.

If you want to use Windows Movie Maker, see PapaJohn's converting tips at

I looked at Papa John's conversion stuff and it seems incredibly
complicated. When you say "PowerDirector and WinDVD Creator, Nero and
Roxio can all handle the VOB files directly," do you mean that those
programs will allow me to edit my movies, using the VOB files,
similarly to the way MovieMaker allows one to edit the files that are
compatible with it?

Yes.... I've tried in all but Nero, which I only use sporadically.
