Default Remote Desktop Connection Secure

Is using remote destop connection pretty secure? I mean in the sense if I
use it from work to access other computers such as at home, other than the
IP address - can any of the session be captured?

With that said, some folks, including myself run RDP through a VPN or SSH
tunnel for added security plus its easy to access multiple Remote Desktop
sessions through the tunnel.
