Is there a good tutorial on remote access?

The office has a server and workstations. Just adding one
work-from-home setup at the moment, but... I'm sure we'll need more in
the future. Concerned about having to have an office computer available
for each connection from a home. Mostly database work. I've seen Remote
Desktop work very fast. We could opt for actually running the database
program on the home computer and accessing the work server. I assume
the trade offs are that would be slower but wouldn't require a
dedicated PC at work.

Also looking at VPN software vs VPN routers.
