when I try to connect from one xp pro machine through a linksys router on
both sides to another xp pro machine I get through the "connecting message"
right away then comes the "verifying username and password" which sits till
it times out how? Do I get it to authenticate

Check your configuration on the host and that the machine is set up correct
to allow remote connects, you are using a user account which has been
properly set up to access the computer and that account is a member of
remote desktop users group. Remember to reboot the machine when you make
some changes.
