Default cannot log on windows in RDC

pls excuse the long post but this is as short as i can make it.
have laptop with xp home and desktop with xp prof with a Network Every-
where router(NR041-WM) installed.
(on the laptop) i open RDC and a get a dialog bx with 5 tabs. in the box
labeled computer, i type the ip add of my desktop, my own name appears in the
user name box, i type a password in the appropriate box and type "ms home" in
the domain box. when i click "connect" i get the following em: "the system
could not log you on. make sure your user name and domain are correct......"
i have only about three passwords that i use (don't use any others). i have
tried all the pass-
words that i use and all the user names that i use and nothing works.
Some observations: when i try to connect to the laptop (from the desktop), i
get a different em: a large message box labeled "remote desktop disconnected"
with a message saying, "the client could not connect to the remote computer.
remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to
accept...."
Both computers have their firewalls enabled to receive exceptions, both are
con-
figured to allow access from other users. From my VERY LIMITED knowledge of
the situation, the issue seems to be with the password on the laptop.
Several wks ago i was attempting to network the two computers but didn't know
i needed a router. Appearantly, (but not likely) i used a password (which i
don't remember) and this is why i can't log on to windows ?? ? I am the
system admn of both com-
puters-- surely there's a way to go in and undo this mess.
ANY help would be appreciated.

See this page for help with Remote Desktop...

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.or...eshooting.html

The user Id and password that you use to login with is local to the PC your
connecting to. Note that you also don't need to fill in the domain
information in a home workgroup environment.
