DSL and Remote Access

Hi all,

First time on this group, but not a newbie to ng's.

Short Question: When moving from 56k dialup on XP Pro to DSL,
will I still be able to make Remote Access to another computer at
another location via the 'net?

I recently got into a talk with my know-it-all son (who actually
does seem to know it all, but not always <g>) and he indicated
that I wouldn't be able to make remote accesses to/from my
sister's machine when the DSL is turned on. My sister had her
DSL turned on last week, and I'm waiting for mine to be turned on
(Verizon DSL).
Probably every 4 to 6 weeks I log onto my sister's machine and
do housekeeping for her, sometimes troubleshooting depending on
what's happening. That was via two 56k dialup accounts and it
all went well this last year or so. She's a user, not a do-er,
so I help keep her machine in decent shape that way because I'm
disabled and cannot travel at all.

My son says it'll no longer work, however, without figuring out
how to jump thru a few hoops. I know I'll find out soon enough,
but I'd like to rub it in that he's -wrong- before he and his
family leave next week! You know, kinda rub it in that the ol'
man's not so dumb after all? OH for the days when Dad knew
EVERYTHING! <g>.
I did a little research and pretty quickly got confused
because it started into tunneling, VPN and other areas I'm not
familiar with at all and never got anywhere that gave me any
comfort level that I could figure it out on my own.
Oh yes, I'm also familiar with using the VNC freebie on my own
LAN so I'm not exactly a complete newbie, but I'm not far from it
either. In reality my "LAN" consists of an XP Pro machine and a
laptop that I can move around to different connection points
within the house. WGLLT, ya know?

Any comments/experience/ a better newsgroup for the question much

If the remote PC is running XP Pro then you can use Remote Desktop (RDP) to
access/control the PC from a remote site. See this page for help with
that...

You need to forward/open TCP Port 3389 through any firewall/router that the
PC you want to access might be behind. Keep in mind that some DSL modems are
also routers so you would need to open the port on the modem/router also.

If the remote PC is running XP Home then look at using UltraVNC with its
encryption plug in as an alternative to RDP. Get the UltraVNC server, client
and encryption plug in from...

In either case you can also run RDP or UltraVNC through a VPN or Secure
Shell (SSH) tunnel for added security. Personally I use SSH and tunnel RDP
through it to access my home LAN and PCs. Here is how I do that...
