Hello

I need to access the server at a company that i work for using VNC. The
router at their end is configured and all the NAT settings are correct
(I know this because another company can connect without problems),
however i am unable to connect. I am guessing its a problem at my end
because if i go into listen mode i can have the connection established
from their end by adding me as a client. This indicates a problem with
the NAT settings on my router (or does it?!).

My router is a Voyager 205, and i have currently got 3 NAT rules set up
for incoming connections on 3 ports to an IP address within my network.
Do i need any other rules set up for when i try to connect from my
network outwards?

Any help/advice you can give me will be much appreciated as it is
annoying asking them to add me as a client every time!

Seem like you have to notify them whenever you need access. If you are able
connect then the problem is not with the router or any of your settings. You
said you can connect with their help so they might be giving users access on
a needs basis. Speak to the admin about the situation. Google "connecting
with vnc" to get a better idea of what it is and does.

The issue is with the router at the server's end, where port 5900 needs to be
forwarded to the server's IP.

If you do this, I'd very strongly advise you to set an IP restriction too,
so that access is from your Internet-connection only, as VNC passwords aren't
all that secure. This of course presupposes you have a fixed IP address on
your home connection. If not, then use of a tunnelling protocol such as SSH
or Zebedee might be advised for better security. (although these are more
complex to set-up)

I just want to express my thanks to you Ian - Your mentioning of
restricting IP addresses made me think that it was already set up that
way and so i was being blocked. I was given a connection a few minutes
ago so had a look at the router set up again. This time going to
Firewall setup instead of NAT. Sure enough there was a block on all
incoming IP address not in the table - i added mine in and can connect
with no problems now!
